Between the Beats

If we have a broken bone, we go to the hospital. With a virus, we go to the doctor. We expect a certain amount of healing for the things that lessen our quality of life. Our hearts are no less important, and yet the only time we seek to care for them is when they’re attacked. Why? Is there not a place or a remedy for a broken heart? Without a doubt, yes!

I so wish I could say that our hearts could be measured on a machine to determine their well-being. That would make life so much easier. If only we could see on a monitor if our hearts were visibly wounded or completely functional, but there is a space between a heart’s being fully functional and being attacked or not working.

There are sounds that a heart makes when it’s healthy that a doctor will listen for with a stethoscope. A professor in college called in “lub dub”. Those sounds identify the time when blood is coming into the heart (the lub) and the time when the heart is pumping blood out into the body (the dub). These sounds or beats happen so quickly and it’s difficult to imagine when the heart could possibly rest.

Yes, our hearts need to rest because they’re made of flesh and all flesh has to have time to rejuvenate. It’s that time between the lub and the dub when the heart rests. There is no sound. It’s peace and quiet.

Likewise, our spirits need that quiet. We must get still before God and sit with Him in the quiet so that our flesh can be rejuvenated. Psalm 91: 1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. (KJV) This quiet place is so essential for us as Christians. We go into our closet, our secret place, and we receive everything we need for every area of our lives as God pours Himself into us.In my own life, it’s in this alone time where God speaks to me the most profoundly. He reveals Himself to me in ways that my mind cannot comprehend. He awes me.Our very health depends on this quiet time with Him. In a heart attack, a hole is literally blown into this muscle.

Sadly and equally as interesting is what happens to a heart that is broken? It doesn’t show up on a machine and cannot be measured on a graph. Does that make it any less significant? Absolutely not!

God is greater than any machine and is able to test the functionality of our hearts. He tells us to come to Him when we are weary and heavy laden so He can give us rest.

The question that weighs on my mind is a bit different however.

Why do we wait until our hearts are weary and heavy laden? Is there any

reason to stay away from Him now?

If your heart is weary and heavy laden, Matthew 28: 11 says “Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest”. Take it to Him and He will give you rest. Is your heart healthy? Praise Him and take His yoke upon you and keep it that way.
