BRING THE BLING

Phl 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things

“Bling” is such a common phrase in today’s culture. We went everything to be shiny and glossy. The more something sparkles the better it is, right? We search for authenticity and permanence in a society that gives more value to trendy, designer fashion than to a worn Bible.

God created His daughters to love beauty. We wear make-up, get our hair colored and highlighted, get our hair and nails done, etc. Those things are wonderful until we allow them to get out of balance.

Today I heard a story about a common practice of women in the Bible. The culture was so obsessed with having bling and gold was so plentiful that the women would pour melted gold over their skin and put dust from gold into their hair in an effort to create a “healthy glow”. Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it?

Fox News recently reported that two of the top five gifts most requested by girls for high school graduation were plastic surgery and breast augmentation. That’s a tragic testimony to our society’s desperate pursuit of that “healthy glow”.

When did people become so desperate to improve our outward appearance and neglect inward character? It must have been around the time that women poured gold over themselves. We spend countless dollars on keeping up appearances and don’t spend time or money with the only thing that can give us the timeless treasures that will fill our empty souls.

Ask yourself these questions:
Do you make time to lay in a tanning bed and can’t
take time for God in your prayer closet?

Are you more particular about the clothes that you wear
than you are about the Bible your read?

I think we’ve all been guilty of having more desire and spending more time and money working on what other people see on the outside than we are about what God sees on the inside. Since we see it now we’re accountable to do something about it. Why not try looking to Him instead of them.

Let’s pray. Holy Father, we thank You Lord that You have given us the desire for beauty for our personal appearance, our character and our surroundings. We pray that You would help us to keep all of those things in a healthy balance that reflects Your glory. Teach us to sparkle for You Lord and not to bring Your glory to ourselves. In the beautiful name of Jesus. AMEN
